DECA is a nationwide organization. Some things DECA is good for is building good leadership skills and helping kids open up and communicate better with more people.
Cynthia Rhoden is the advisor of DECA. Rhoden did not choose to be a part of DECA; it was just assigned to her when she started teaching at karns. Rhoden had been with Karns High School for 19 years.
“At Karns we have roughly 40 students in DECA. In the state there are about 2,500 kids in DECA and nationwide 50,000. To get into our DECA at karns I charge 30$ that covers everything.” said Rhoden.
One reason Rhoden loves her job is because the kids always put a smile on her face.
“I really have a great relationship with my DECA students, 90% of them come back every year and stay with me till they graduate.” said Rhoden.
Recruiting new members is Rhodens favorite part
“This week we have DECA week and I’m hoping to recruit at least 10 more members,” said Rhoden.
This year DECA is sponsoring Ghoul At The School and a Daddy Daughter and Valentine dance for Karns High School in February.
Bethany Morris is a DECA officer and President over everything. Morris has been in DECA for 3 years and been an officer for two years.
“My favorite part is going to state to compete, it was really fun, we had a good time, it was a 3 day thing in chattanooga and it was so much fun,” said Morris.
Last year Morris was the community service officer.
“It’s been a really good experience,” Said Morris
“I think I’m very good with new people and I used to be very nervous to talk to people but DECA helped me get out there and open my shell so I want that for new people coming,” said Morris.
As president of DECA Morris has to write a weekly newsletter.
