During this time of the month, it gets very chilly in Karns, lots of snow and icy road conditions. This can be a problem for many student drivers, as well as for many teachers. I assume many people were bored out of their minds, not knowing what to do with all the snow and freezing conditions. Winter season can also affect our mood, and our daily schedule routines.
¨It made me wake up late¨, Sbehydy Batrez said, “These winter conditions can make you either very lazy or overwhelmed.”
Many people have different opinions on what they consider, ¨bad weather¨. Such as Mr. Clugg who takes a very practical approach.
¨Anything that impairs driving conditions,¨ Mr. Clugg said.
Some feel a negative way about the snow, however others do not waste time and enjoy all the snow, before it is all gone.
¨I did enjoy the snow, it was nice. I built a snowman..¨, Sbehydy Batrez said.
The weather this year however has improved. Last year we had an abundant amount of snow.
¨I mean we had so much more snow last year, obviously, we had days off for the snow already this year,” Mr. Ottinger said. “I think it’s been pretty similar for a couple of years at least.¨
There can be positive and negative things about the weather. The Knox county school board has different points of view when it comes to making the decision whether we should cancel school or not, however students on the other hand feel differently.
¨I do believe it should have been canceled for at least one or two more days because there was ice on the road and it was quite slippery… um some people couldn’t even get to school,¨ Sbehydy Batrez said.
There are obviously hazardous effects that can happen if we do not cancel school on the days that are truly necessary.
¨Buses are not the most uh stable vehicles when it’s icy outside, so when you get like a bus load of 50 kids, and if it slips off the road, it’s never a good day for anybody,¨ Mr Ottinger said.
The staff want children to be able to attend school without feeling like they’re going to be in danger while driving to school. During the days there was no school, due to the weather, Mr Clugg had gotten into a minor accident.
“I was driving my car, it was the first time I was trying to drive in the snow” Mr. Clugg said “I looked at this one hill and I’m like.. Oh I can get on that easily, and I tried to get up and well short story, I failed. I ended up sliding down the hill and I cracked the huge trunk out of my back bumper..¨
Not only is cancelling school due to the weather a good thing, but it helps decrease students being in accidents, as well as for teachers/staff in Karns included.
Overall, the staff and principles are doing the best they can to make sure and ensure students will be safe when these conditions are upon us.
¨We do the best we can with buses um or allow parents to check them out… but that’s what we do,¨ Mr. Ottinger states.
