Karns high school uses a four block schedule however the schedule may limit students academic abilities. Many suspect a switch to the eight block schedule could improve students’ learning capabilities. This would make all 8 classes in a students schedule, year round, 45 minute long classes There have been many debates about which one is better. Some say the four block schedule allows for better learning while others say the eight block schedule allows for better learning retention. Here is what some students and staff have to say about the topic.
Bryson Mcghee, a senior at the school, would be apprehensive of a new schedule, if it were to be imposed, as he’s concerned it could overwhelm students.
“Yes, I think it’s too much… it would just be too stressful, “Bryson said, “I feel like classes are too long.”
Eight classes might be more stressful as during the eoc’s instead of having to worry and study for four classes you need to study for eight. On the contrary, Chris Ottinger, a principal at Karns High School, believes that the eight block schedule has a few advantages.
“I almost think the 42 minute class is better as it’s short and you keep the kids attention better,” Ottinger said.
Ottinger has taught both four block classes and traditional classes. He is still hesitant to say year long classes are completely better though.
Erica Hatch, another principal prefers the four block schedule although she does believe class length could be improved upon.
“I really like it, I think it’s better this way,” Hatch said, “I’m thinking an hour long or maybe an hour and 15 minute class would be good… Once you go past that, it gets hard”.
An hour and 15 minute class would be a good alternative, some classes have a lot of free time where nothing happens anyways. A longer break between classes may help as it gives students time to destress and prepare.
Some people prefer shorter but more classes a semester while others prefer longer but less total classes a semester. At the end of the day the schedule really comes down to what is best for both student and teacher.
