The Karns High School Prom is taking place this Friday at Hunter Valley Farms. This formal dance is an opportunity for students to dress to the nines, hop on the dance floor, and celebrate the end of the year with hit music, delicious snacks, beverages, and good company. There is so much excitement surrounding the party between 7-11 pm, in fact, that there is hardly any recognition for the weeks of hard work the prom committee commits to leading up to setting the stage for this momentous occasion.
The Student Council is in charge of the prom committee. They sell tickets, pick the theme, and put up decorations in the hours before this special night.
“We picked the prom theme kind of late, but back in February and since then we’ve been ordering in some of the supplies to decorate the venue,” said Tyler Woods, another member of the student council and prom committee, “So right now we have palm trees, some string lights, some big dice, and I think some poker chips. The day of prom we’re going to get to the venue around 12 o’clock to start setting up.”
When selecting the prom theme, it was imperative to find one that would not be basic and would be different from other schools, as Tyler Woods mentioned. It would seem that they have delivered with this year’s theme: Viva La Beava. It’s school appropriate Las Vegas theming, capturing the charm of the desert city through the use of bright lights and a red carpet, which will actually be blue for school spirit.
“Hunter Valley Farms provides a lot of the decorations, like tablecloths, and the lights, and all that stuff for us…” Mrs. Newman, a staff member helping with the decorations from prom, said, “So when we go that day to set up, everything’s pretty much already done, we’re just adding our little decorations that we want to add.”
Mrs. Newman described the prom budget as being derived from ticket sales in previous years. Once they break even between the costs and the amount of tickets sold, then the fund amassed from selling the extra tickets goes into the finances for the decorations the next year.
This year, Mrs. Stair has purchased and arranged for there to be balloon arches, balloons lined down the blue carpet, crowns and sashes for the Prom King and Queen, and two photo booths this year. One will be the typical photo booth with the background and props. The other will be a 360 photo booth, rented out from the extra money accumulated from last year.
Unfortunately, an unforeseen problem sprung up on Wednesday.
“We actually just found out today [Wednesday] that they can’t start decorating until 3 o’clock on Friday, so this year it’s going to be a bit more organized and has to be really focused because they only have about three hours before people start showing up,” Coach Arvin, Mrs. Stair’s self-proclaimed sidekick in taking charge of the prom committee, said.
The prom committee is going to have to race through their preparations for the night. With lights to string up, a blue carpet to be rolled out, and a million different arrangements to be brought forth, it is sure to be a stressful three hours. After that, the students are free to enjoy the night.
“Besides that [day] going in and setting up, I’ll be there that night with a bunch of friends,” Audrey Ballard, another member of the student council and prom committee, said.
The prom committee will get to reap the benefits of their hard work along with the rest of the student body. Until then, however, Viva la Beava!
