Karns High School’s HOSA is accepting diaper donations in room 222 until September 26 to help struggling parents in the community. The donations go directly to Helping Mamas in Knoxville. This club is made up of students, and they serve the community.
HOSA is participating in this drive so that parents across Knoxville can have access to the necessities they cannot afford. Dana Popa, the supporting teacher of HOSA, discussed the importance of the community helping those in need.
“I think they’re going to be very appreciative of it because diapers are expensive,” Popa said, “It’s one of those things that you have to have… and you’ve got families that can’t afford it.”
Giving to the community also benefits the teens and kids that participate. Popa explained that even one pack of diapers a student brings in will make a difference to someone. Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they donate to families, because they are helping these parents take care of their children.
“I feel pretty good,” Claira Posadas said, “I’m trying to work on bringing more types of those things to the school and to the community… to raise more awareness.”
Posadas is an officer of HOSA, and she thinks these drives help students interact with each other. She explained the ideas behind offering incentives to donate to the cause. Another student, Ammon Caylor Brown explained her reasoning behind participating in HOSA, the club and the drives.
“I feel accomplished, and I’m proud of myself,” Caylor Brown said, “I enjoy doing it [and this drive] will help [parents] a lot … a lot of supplies for babies cost really high.”
Unfortunately, the drives don’t always go as planned. In a school full of students, many teens do not have the funds to provide necessities for other families.
“A negative is [that] we are talking about high school students,” Popa said, “…a lot of them don’t have jobs or their families are struggling financially, sometimes we don’t get a lot of donations.”
This diaper drive benefits families in need and students’ sense of fulfillment. HOSA’s drives uplift the Karns and Knoxville communities. Donating can change everything in someone’s life.
