This school year, the Karns High School counselors have put in place a system for any student wanting to schedule a meeting with their counselor . On the KHS Counseling canvas page, clicking the words “Meet With Your Counselor” will take you to a google form where you fill out simple information that the counselors will use to get in contact with you.
“We made the meeting request form as a way for students to be able to reach out and be like ‘Hey, I need to talk to you about maybe academics, maybe something personal, maybe college and career stuff,’” Savanna Reynolds said, “Just as a way to kind of keep up with who needs to talk.”
The meeting request form provides a way for students to reach out to their counselors for a variety of reasons. Academics and school related issues aren’t the only reason someone might put in a request, students who just need someone to talk to also have the form open to them.
“I usually see my students the day they request [a meeting,]” Kelly Hicks said, “If it’s an emergency, the teachers have been told, if a student says they need to see their counselor, they go straight to the counseling office and our secretary finds us.”
When a student submits a request form, the counselors will try their best to meet with them as soon as possible. If there’s an urgent matter, the form isn’t needed and the student should go to the counseling office and have the secretary take care of getting the counselor to see them.
“I don’t know that it’s necessarily made it more efficient for the students,” Alison Morris said, “But once they’ve moved our counselors out of this office, it’s more efficient for our counselors because they’re not in here anymore, so the kids can’t just come down here to see them.”
This year new offices for the counselors were added throughout the halls. Naturally, this would cause some problems to both counselors and students. A student might come to the counselling office looking for someone to talk to, but they won’t find anyone because the counselors have moved offices. The meeting request form helps solve this problem.
“I’m sure it’s frustrating to students getting used to it,” Hicks said, “…the middle school does this, so we’re hoping if we keep this up that students will just be used to it since they’ve done it in middle school.”
Students who see the counselors a lot might not be very happy with the addition of the meeting request form. However it’s only been in place for a month, the counselors hope that students will grow to accept it.
