Whenever the beaver mascot comes out during game nights or pep rallies here at KHS, he adds an extra touch of energy to the atmosphere. Ever since KHS claimed their mascot as a beaver many years ago, he’s become more than just a symbol over time. The mascot adds an extra touch of school spirit not only towards the school but to the community as well. Many find the mascot to be unique and different because it sets apart from your typical school mascots like a tiger, bird, bear, or spartan. The beaver brings everyone together such as students and the community, reminding them where they come from, who they are, and what school spirit/pride is really all about.
The beaver mascot here at KHS, originally came about due to the school’s location being zoned near Beaver Creek which is a natural landmark that runs throughout the community. The beaver represents hard work, determination, team work, and protectiveness.
“I think that our mascot is different, creative, and entertaining,” Zuly Galarza said, “Anytime he comes out in our pep rallies he makes people laugh and have a great time in the moment.”
Having an entertaining or engaging mascot can help students have more support and pride within their school spirit. Having a mascot builds a sense of identity towards the school and relates to the community that the school is located in or around.
“I love how a beaver was chosen to be our mascot, it’s very cool,” Carter George said, “They are hardworking animals that have great skills which are good characteristics that center our school’s traits.”
The beaver mascot highlights the spirit of KHS, it helps remind students to stay determined, work hard, and support one another as a whole. As well as taking pride in everything they do such as in sports or working on class assignments/projects.
“I think a beaver is pretty engaging and appealing to have as a mascot,” Rylee Parker said, “I don’t have in mind another school that has a beaver as their mascot, which makes us different from other schools.”
The pride students here at KHS feel towards the beaver mascot shows how much school spirit matters to them as well as the community. The beaver is more than just a symbol, it’s a reminder of what it means to stay hard working, dedicated, and proud to be a student at KHS as well as a student at KMS and KES.
