Should Tardy Sweeps Continue at KHS?

Students walk to the tardy post to receive passes to class

Editor’s Note: The student newspaper of Karns High School is a public forum, with its student editorial board making all decisions concerning its contents. Opinions in the paper are not necessarily those of the staff, nor should any opinion expressed in a public forum be construed as the opinion or policy of the administration, unless so attributed.

Tardy Sweeps should no longer be in use at Karns High School. There are so many possible causes for a student to be late to class and I feel like staff aren’t seeing the bigger picture behind it. They just see it as a student being late to class but not taking out the time to actually see why they’re late and helping them come up with a solution.

Students could be late to school due to scheduling conflicts with parents, traffic, weather/ road conditions, and simply just sleeping past their alarm. Sometimes the case is that students are playing around but those students tend to already have a lot of parties or are getting caught skipping class. That shouldn’t affect the rest of the students just because they are tardy once or twice, it’s unfair that after 2 or 3 tardies they call your parents and make it a bigger deal than what it has to be. Obviously some students need their parents called because they do it frequently but that isn’t always the situation.

“Tardy sweeps make you late to class due to the fact that you have to wait for an administrator to put in all the students’ information who are tardy,” said student Jada Burgins. Tardy sweeps seem to be more effective on students who aren’t usually late but to the ones who are always late they really don’t care nor affect them. Each minute you miss is a loss of learning time and disruption to teachers. Yes I understand that being late due to unnecessary reasons causes disruptions to class and I get that administrators are trying to reduce tardiness but tardy sweeps aren’t the answer. “Teachers need to have a meeting with the kids who are constantly tardy,” student Ty Bradley. There are enough uncertainties that come with being a high school student, and administrators should be wanting to get rid of unnecessary stress. With that being said we need to end tardy sweeps in Karns High School.
