Technology Trends for 2020

Austin Zettle, Senior Reporter

The year 2020 is bringing big trends to the world. Three examples of these are 5g networks, autonomous driving, and streaming services.

5g is the fifth generation wireless technology for digital cellular services. The hope for this advancement is that it will increase the cellular companies sales and expand mobile networks for companies such as Verizon, US Cellular, T-Mobile and Sprint. These cellular companies already offer 3g, 4g and now 5g networks.

Autonomous driving has become an internet sensation and a global eyecatcher. Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla Inc.,says “I could either watch it happen or become a part of it”. Tesla Inc. makes 2 autonomous driving cars; the Model X, and the Model S. In 2018 alone, Tesla Inc. managed to produce over $17.6 billion dollars in revenue from car sales. As of 2019, the following car companies have made autonomous driving packages available:  Toyota, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, BMW, Cadillac, and Lexus. More car companies are expected to follow.

Streaming to watch the perfect movie or the perfect TV show has become an everyday occurrence for the world. Streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime have become popular worldwide, and on November 12, 2019, Disney came out with their very own streaming service called Disney+. These streaming services include movies, tv shows, cartoons, biographies, and short films. Since streaming services came out, cable TV companies such as DirectTV, X-fininty, Comcast, and Dish Network sales have declined substantially. Streaming services are available on more devices and only require a monthly subscription, which is much cheaper than a regular cable bill.

These three 2020 trends are just the start of a brand new year and many more are to follow.
