Cosmetology Teaches KHS Students to be Entrepreneurs

Cosmetology is molding students into future entrepreneurs. Cosmetology is a class offered at Byington Solway, which is located on the Karns High school campus. Byington Solway is open to certain Knox county schools. Students learn information about the field of cosmetology from the basics to in-depth knowledge of what it takes to become a licensed practitioner in the state of Tennessee.

When you first walk into the room the first thing you see is a bright pink room filled with a real-life salon with stations, mirrors, and different wig heads for the students to practice on while they learn.

Mrs. Odell teaches her students not only how to perform the activities of a cosmetologist, such as cutting hair and waxing eyebrows, but the proper way to handle customers that you are serving. Whilst not on the floor Students do book work along with work on the chromebooks but while they are on the floor they perform work on the model heads and sometimes even real people. The interviewed students/ teacher said what they needed to say about this class.

If you’re late you get your weekly board hours taken away…” Odell also states that you’re not in her class to do your own hair, you’re in here to start your career .

Odell says the most challenging thing in class would be the finger waves coming up.
She states that you get a total of 1500 hours in the class, if you make below 70% you get your state boarding hours taken away, the hours you receive go towards your board hours.

Abby Harper stated that the most interesting part about cosmetology is Learning how to do hair, she states that she’s always been interested in doing hair, the nieces thing that Abby has done in class was learn the correct way to do her hair. The challenging part about cosmetology is learning how to identify everything correctly.

“Cosmetology really helped me decide what I want to do with my life and helped me realize that I wanted to do this as a job and now I am attending Tennessee school of Beauty..,” stated graduated senior from Karns High school Erilynn Huff.

“If I had to rate the class I would rate it a 9/10 there was a lot of hands on stuff obviously and Odell is the best teacher ever. The class is super fun…,” said HVA senior Peter Le.
