The Karns High School NEHS program is back after a couple of years’ pause. This program is primarily for a celebration and promotion of literacy. It is an opportunity for literacy students to read, write, and even rhyme. If you love literacy, but with a twist, this program is for you.
Rachel Monday and April Shoults are in charge of the NEHS program. They advertised on the KHS morning and afternoon announcements, hung fliers up around the school, and then when they had enough people interested, they held an induction. They have 23 students this year.
“I joined NEHS because I love English and writing,” said Cecilia Hampton, a sophomore at KHS, “I am most excited for the slam poetry event that we will have because it is fun to write and rhyme at the same time.”
This program is perfect for Hampton, due to her love for English and writing. She wants more experience to put on her resume, and that is another reason why she joined NEHS.
“I was excited to join because of this year’s service project,” said Tatum Main, a senior at KHS, “This year we are holding a literacy fair for elementary aged adolescents and we’re hoping to donate books to each kid.”
It’s important for programs like these to do fun things within the students in the program, that gives students an opportunity to try new things.
“When Mrs. Monday reached out to me to be the co-leader of our NEHS program, I was so honored,” Shoults said, “Aside from being an English teacher, I just genuinely think that students need literature.”
Some previous notable members of NEHS have had poems that were published in magazines. Others have gone on to major in English at various universities, and all can have the title of being in NEHS on their college applications or resumes.
NEHS is a program where you can build relationships with fellow students in the program, grow in the literacy department, and think in very creative ways. You can contact Mrs. Monday and Mrs. Shoults for any further information or questions.
