Senior Skip Day is an unofficial holiday at Karns High School that happened on November 3rd, where almost all of the seniors in high school skipped school for the day. It’s not an excused absence, however it’s heavily ingrained into the school culture.
“I try to get to school on time each day, so when Senior Skip Day comes around I can miss that day,” Rebecca Arizmendi said.
Students get limited absences each school year. If they go over, they can’t do things they will enjoy. For example, Prom. Some students go to the mall, work, or stay home on senior skip day. Seniors still have to make-up the work they missed on their skip day.
Teachers know when Senior skip day is. Most teachers don’t have a problem with it because they either have no seniors or a mixed class (all grades). Some seniors come to school on senior skip day because of various reasons. Teachers who teach senior-heavy or all senior classes like Personal Finance/Economics can get a break from teaching that class because most everyone is gone.
“I stayed home and my friend came over and we gamed,” Dominic Overcash said.
Some students study for upcoming tests. This year students got a 4-day weekend since right after senior skip day was Election. Senior skip day comes once a semester and students enjoy this day off. Many seniors plan fun activities like hanging with friends or going somewhere fun like the mall.
Senior skip days can definitely cause some problems though. Students in dual enrollment for example, still have to attend their classes at Pellissippi to get their college credits.
“I hung out with my friend and we studied,” Taylor Richards said.
Senior Skip Day is a day where seniors skip and relax, hang out with friends, or study. It is a day where seniors can hang out with their friends and relax before graduation. Senior Skip Day is a once a semester (twice a year) tradition that keeps coming every year for seniors.
