All of the staff from 865 Academy schools have partnered with different businesses to educate themselves on potential futures their students can have on Tuesday, November 4. At Karns High School the overall goal is to be prepared for life after high school whether that is education, employment or enlisting in the military.
There are different types of academies within the school that specialize in many different learning communities so students can be organized around learning more towards their specific focuses.
“I went to Connors Concepts where they talked about different types of roles inside of a business and internships they currently have available for college students,” Art teacher Alexandra Boyum said.
By shadowing the professionals in various fields, teachers learned about the skills and qualifications businesses look for. The teachers at Connors Concepts, a dining establishment, got a deeper understanding of careers available to their students.
“While at UT with the culinary art center they had a lot of professors there that were talking about the various jobs that they could do within the tourism businesses,” Teacher Logan Atwell said.
Understanding current job trends enables teachers to better guide students toward meaningful career paths. Educators understand the importance of unique paths such as culinary and tourism. Although there are many career paths that aren’t a typical choice, it plays an important role in our society.
“At ABC Start Center they showed us how students could do dual enrollment and even work during the day and take classes in the evening to learn different job skills,” History teacher Keith Hall said.
The teachers in Knox county schools have broadened their knowledge of career opportunities students can have by recognizing the various skills that every job requires. With these insights teachers can better guide students in exploring career paths and helping them prepare the skills necessary for such careers.
